The media and body image
Every day, in so many ways, the beauty industry (and the media in general) tell women and girls that being admired, envied and desired based on their looks is a primary function of true womanhood. The beauty template women are expected to follow is extremely narrow, unrealistic and frequently hazardous to their health. When I started my weight loss journey in December 2015, I had no intention of going above and beyond my capabilities because all I wanted to do was just “lose the weight”. Today my journey is more than just helping people to lose weight, but to realize our God-given strength within. I want to inspire more people to not just hope and wish but to start taking action and creating healthier versions of themselves. Whatever your motivation is, make sure it’s deeper than just looking good in hopes of fitting in or pleasing others. My health was worth putting in that overtime in prepping healthy meals, doing those extra reps, going that extra mile, putting in that extra effort and surrounding myself with positivity. If you want long lasting healthy results, you have to do it the right way, the healthy way. Be patient with yourself.
When I look at myself now, I see strength, I see a fighter, I see self-love, I see boldness, I see power, I see fearlessness, etc. Sure, I’d love for my body fat% to be a little lower and have more defined abs. But I’m okay if it doesn’t happen. Making healthy choices and exercising hasn’t only been good for my physical health but also for my mental/emotional health. Make sure whatever you chose to pursue makes you feel great from the inside out and my hope and prayer is for you all to find joy in something that makes you WHOLE and HAPPY. Going through this journey has taught me that if I can mentally and emotionally push myself and others to get ‘fit’, I can mentally continue to push myself in life and make sure no one defines me but ME! As we approach 2019, I urge you all to look past the exterior on your quest for great health and you too will be singing your praises and not waiting for others to toot your horn. Be your own cheerleader. Being healthy is not a size nor is it a number on the scale. Loving is yourself is the greatest revolution and you owe it to yourself, the same love that you so freely give to other people. Love your body!
