When you think of revamping your diet to include more vegetables, your mind probably imagines leafy greens like kale, a “superfood” with hype—but let me suggest another option: beets. Beets contain a high concentration of nitrates, which have a blood pressure-lowering effect. This may lead to a reduced risk of heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. They are also packed with healthy nutrients, like the five essential vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium and protein. Other health benefits include; boosting eye health, boosting endurance and lowering risk of dementia.
The slight sweetness of the beets actually complement the berries really well, so there’s no earthy dirty taste in this smoothie!
- 1 1/2 cups of frozen mixed berries
- 1 banana
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)
- 1 small-medium beet (cooked or raw- I prefer cooked)*
- 1– 1 ½ cups of almond milk
instructions
- Add all ingredients to a blender and blend on high until creamy and smooth.
- Serve and enjoy immediately!
-
Garnish with more berries and exotic fruits like dragon fruit (optional)!
I hope that you learn to love beets as much as we do, for your heart and your taste buds’ sake!
Enjoy
